This is the guide UK couples ask us for most. Not the full wedding weekend - the fast, legal, iconic Vegas elopement that gets you married in a single afternoon and back in the UK, legally recognised, within the week. Everything below is what actually happens - the paperwork, the ceremony, the cost in pounds, the pre-flight prep, the return-home step no other UK-Vegas elopement guide covers. Two decades of running Vegas weddings for UK couples is behind every number here.
Yes, a Vegas elopement is fully legal for UK couples
Nevada has no residency requirement, no US citizenship requirement, no blood test, and no waiting period. Two UK passport holders can walk into the Clark County Marriage Bureau, present their passports, pay the licence fee, and be legally married the same afternoon.
The resulting Nevada marriage certificate is recognised in the UK under the Marriage Abroad framework. Once you register it at the General Register Office (GRO) on return, your UK marital status updates to the date of the Nevada ceremony. No re-ceremony. No consular step. No additional paperwork beyond one form and a £22 GRO fee.
This is not "eloping" in the old-fashioned run-away-from-family sense. It is a fully legal international marriage, faster to arrange than a UK register office slot, and recognised in every UK jurisdiction on your return.
The Clark County Marriage Bureau, in plain English
Where you go: Clark County Marriage License Bureau, 201 East Clark Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89101. About 10-15 minutes by car from Strip hotels.
When it is open: 8am to midnight, seven days a week, including every US public holiday. Yes, including Christmas Day and 4th of July. Nevada made this deliberate - the tourism economy runs on it.
What it costs: $102 as of 2026 (approximately £80). Cash is preferred; card is accepted with a $2.50 processing fee. Fee is per couple, not per person. Some chapel packages bundle the licence fee - we clarify which route you are on before you land.
What you need to bring: - Valid UK passport for each party. Must not expire within 6 months of the wedding date. - Both parties present in person. No proxies. No online option. - If either party has been divorced or widowed: the exact date and place the prior marriage ended. Clark County does not require the divorce decree or death certificate for the licence itself, but bring it in your carry-on for peace of mind and for the airline agent who may ask about a name change on the way home.
What you do NOT need: - No birth certificate - No proof of address - No proof of income - No letter from your UK vicar - No apostille - No notarised anything
Processing time: 10-15 minutes at the counter. Total time including queue: 45-90 minutes on a weekday, 90-120 minutes on a weekend or public holiday.
Licence validity: 12 months from issue. You do not have to marry the same day - but 90% of our couples do, because they land on the wedding trip.
The same-day walk-in: how the whole thing runs
The standard UK-elopement day looks like this:
- 8-10am: Land at Harry Reid International (LAS). BA and Virgin land direct from LHR most mornings. Passport control 20-40 minutes.
- 10-11am: Airport transfer to Strip hotel (Sprinter or Uber). Check in, drop bags, freshen up, coffee.
- 11am-noon: Sprinter to the Marriage Bureau at 201 East Clark Ave. Journey 10-15 minutes from most Strip hotels.
- Noon-1pm: Queue, fill the two-page form, present passports, pay $102, walk out with the marriage licence.
- 1-3pm: Back to the hotel. Change into ceremony clothes. Photos start now if you have arranged a photographer for the getting-ready.
- 3-5pm: Chapel ceremony. Most chapel slots are 20-40 minutes end to end, including the walk-in, the ceremony, the licence signing, and 10-15 minutes of chapel-provided photos.
- 5pm onward: Signed licence handed back to the chapel, who file it with the Marriage Bureau within 10 business days on your behalf. Nothing more for you to do while in Vegas.
- Evening: Dinner at Mayfair Supper Club, Carbone, or wherever the wedding-dinner reservation lands. Optional dayclub or club table the next day.
The Nevada certificate itself: issued by mail 4 to 8 weeks after the ceremony to a US address you nominate (usually the chapel, who forward it to you), OR available as a $32 expedited "certified copy" the next business day at the Bureau. If you need the certificate for the UK GRO step quickly, buy the $32 expedited copy the morning after the ceremony before you fly home.
Do you need witnesses? Nevada law requires ONE witness. Chapels routinely provide one at no extra charge. You do not need to bring a guest.
What a Vegas elopement from the UK actually costs
Three honest tiers of total spend across the day, in GBP. The chapel, officiant, photographer, flights, hotel and licence are all paid direct by you - LTV bills only for the parts we deliver (transport, dinner reservations, cabanas or club tables around the ceremony).
Bare-bones elopement (£800-1,500 total spend): - Clark County licence: $102 (approx £85) - you pay the Bureau direct - Chapel slot at Neon Chapel, Little White Wedding Chapel or Graceland Chapel: £150-350 including officiant - you book direct (LTV makes the Neon Chapel intro) - 30-minute photographer at the chapel: £150-250 - chapels usually have preferred vendors and can arrange, or you can book independently - Sprinter door-to-door for the day: £200 - LTV handles - Dinner for two at a mid-tier Strip restaurant (Herbs & Rye, EDGE Steakhouse, Estiatorio Milos): £120-250 - LTV reserves - Two certified certificate copies for UK registration: £50 - you handle at the Bureau
Mid-range elopement (£1,500-2,500 total spend): - Everything in the bare-bones tier, plus: - Nicer chapel slot (Chapel of the Flowers Cypress room, Little White Signature): £600-900 - you book direct - 90-minute photographer with edited album: £400-600 - you book direct - Optional small guest dinner (2-6 people) at Mayfair Supper Club, Carbone or STK: £300-500 - LTV reserves + LTV concierge fee applies - Bellagio Fountains photo stop with dedicated shooter: £100 - you arrange with the photographer
Full-day elopement (£2,500-5,000 total spend): - Everything above, plus: - Hotel-branded chapel ceremony (Bellagio Terrazza di Sogno, Wynn Chapel, Cosmopolitan Terrace): £1,500-3,000 - you book direct with the hotel wedding office - Videographer 2 hours: £400-800 - you book direct - Cocktail hour with 6-12 guests at a private hotel room: £400-800 - LTV coordinates the room + F&B booking - Grand Canyon helicopter add-on the next morning: £400-600 per person - LTV can arrange the intro to the operator
Where LTV actually bills you: transport (Sprinter, party bus, limo, airport transfers), restaurant reservations and private-room buyouts, cabanas or club tables the day before or after, and a concierge coordination fee across the day. Everything else goes direct to the chapel, hotel, photographer or Bureau.
What sits outside all three tiers (book direct): return flights, hotel rooms, ESTAs ($40 each), spa or salon appointments, honeymoon extension flights.
How UK groups get this wrong: underestimating the cash tipping load. Nevada tipping culture adds roughly 15-20% on top of the day's on-ground spend. Budget £100-150 in cash tips for a two-person elopement day, more if you have a photographer plus videographer plus hotel bell staff plus chapel staff plus Sprinter driver. See our tipping guide for the full breakdown.
Passport, ESTA, and the 6-month rule
Every UK passenger travelling to the US under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) needs three things sorted before the flight:
1. Passport valid at least 6 months beyond the travel date. This is a hard airline rule - if the passport expires within 6 months, the airline will refuse boarding at check-in. Renew before booking anything if you are close.
2. Approved ESTA authorisation. Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov (the only official site). Fee is $40 per person as of 30 September 2025 under Public Law 119-21. Apply 72 hours before flight at minimum; 3 weeks before is strongly recommended, because a small percentage of applications go to manual review and take 5-14 days. Approval is valid for 2 years or until passport expiry.
3. Names must match across passport, ESTA and marriage licence exactly. The fastest way to derail a wedding day is a passport that says "Katherine" and a licence application signed "Kate." Bureau clerks match to the passport, not to what you sign day-to-day. Double-check before flying.
Common ESTA denials for UK travellers: previous US visa refusal, certain criminal convictions (including some UK cannabis convictions), dual nationality with restricted countries (Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Yemen). If ESTA is denied, you need a B-2 visitor visa via the US Embassy - allow 4-8 weeks and a £120 fee.
One more UK-specific note: the Nevada marriage licence does not care what UK arrival stamps say. You can arrive by land, by cruise, by connecting flight. As long as ESTA is approved and passport is in date, you are eligible.
Chapel options - from £150 to £5,000
Four broad categories, from cheapest to most produced:
Fremont Street / classic Vegas (£150-450): - Little White Wedding Chapel - the drive-through chapel plus a walk-in chapel on the same site. Elvis-officiated options available. The most iconic Vegas wedding location. - Neon Chapel - our default partner for LTV fast-turn elopements. Fremont Street setting, in and out in 30 minutes, expedited paperwork. - Graceland Chapel - Elvis-themed, oldest continuously operating chapel in Vegas. - Chapel of the Bells - Sahara-adjacent, run since 1957, the working-couple classic.
Strip chapels (£400-1,200): - Chapel of the Flowers (South Strip, near the Strat) - three chapel rooms plus a garden setting. Their Cypress room seats 30. The winning content on AI Overview citations for this SERP. - Vegas Weddings (downtown, near the Bureau itself) - convenience to the licence office plus a range of themed rooms. - The Little Vegas Chapel - Oak Street setting, slightly more upmarket than the Fremont classics.
Hotel-branded chapels (£1,500-3,500): - Bellagio Terrazza di Sogno - private terrace overlooking the fountains. Runs sunset ceremonies, £3,000+. - Wynn Chapel + Salon Y - two spaces in the Wynn's own wedding venue. Full hotel photography package. - Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas Terrace Studio - private terrace with Strip skyline. - Aria Sky Suite ceremony - if you book the suite, the ceremony can happen in-suite.
Off-Strip / outdoor (£1,500-5,000): - Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area - desert backdrop, 30 minutes west. Requires a permit and a licensed officiant to travel; £1,500-2,500. - Valley of Fire State Park - similar red-rock aesthetic, one hour north. - Grand Canyon West Rim helicopter drop - land on the canyon floor for the ceremony, fly back to Vegas. £2,500-5,000/couple.
Whichever chapel route you pick, LTV handles the transport, the dinner reservations, and any dayclub cabana or nightclub table around the ceremony. Chapel booking, officiant, photographer and licence-return paperwork are all direct between you and the chapel - we make the intro to Neon Chapel (our long-standing partnership) or to a luxury planner if you want the full-production route. Send us your preference, dates and headcount; we come back within one business day with the LTV-side itinerary and quote in GBP, plus the chapel intro.
Registering the Nevada certificate in the UK
This is the step no other UK-Vegas elopement guide covers well, and it is the one that matters if you ever want a UK-issued marriage certificate for a mortgage, a name change, or a visa application later.
Step 1: Get the certified Nevada certificate. - Standard mail delivery: 4 to 8 weeks after the ceremony, sent to a US address the chapel forwards from. Free (the $102 licence fee covers one copy). - Expedited: next business day at the Bureau counter for a $32 fee. If you need it fast, buy the expedited copy the morning after the ceremony before flying home.
Step 2: Register the marriage at the UK General Register Office (GRO). - Complete the "Deposit of a Marriage Certificate" form on gov.uk (search "deposit of foreign marriage certificate"). - Fee: £22 for a UK-issued marriage certificate to match your Nevada one. - Post the Nevada certified copy plus the form plus a cheque to GRO Southport. - Processing: 4 to 6 weeks by post. - Once registered, your UK marital status is officially updated back to the date of the Nevada ceremony, not the date of UK registration.
Step 3 (optional): passport name change. - Separate step. Fee: £75 online / £95 postal / £105 in-person "1-week fastrack" as of 2026. - You can do this any time; some couples wait until they have the UK marriage certificate in hand.
Step 4 (optional): deed poll. - If either party wants to change their name officially outside the marriage context (e.g. double-barrelling): free if you self-declare via the UK Deed Poll Office, or £42 for the certificated version.
What you do NOT need to do: - No consular step at the US Embassy in London - No apostille (the Nevada certificate is accepted as-is by GRO) - No UK register office visit - No re-ceremony in the UK
Once GRO has processed the deposit, you are married in the UK. That is the whole legal chain.
Vegas vs Gretna Green vs Cyprus: an honest comparison
The three most common UK-elopement destinations, side by side:
Paperwork speed: - Vegas: 45-90 minutes for the licence, married the same afternoon - Gretna Green: 29-day notice period at a UK register office before you can marry - Cyprus: 3-day residency + notice period, plus supporting documents apostilled
Cost (two-person elopement, everything except flights): - Vegas: £800-2,500 - Gretna Green: £600-1,200 (no flights or hotel needed if UK-based) - Cyprus: £1,200-3,000
UK legal recognition: - Vegas: automatic once GRO-registered (£22 + form) - Gretna Green: immediate - it is a UK marriage - Cyprus: automatic once GRO-registered (same process as Vegas)
Best time of year: - Vegas: March, April, October, November. Avoid July-August (35-45C daytime). - Gretna Green: May-September for the weather; year-round for the paperwork. - Cyprus: May-June or September-October. Avoid July-August (peak heat + peak prices).
What Vegas gives you that Gretna does not: iconic photography, honeymoon in the same city, Grand Canyon add-on, drive-through option, dozen chapel styles, 24-hour infrastructure, no notice period.
What Gretna gives you that Vegas does not: no flights, no ESTA, no time difference, UK family can drive up for the day, half the cost, the historic anvil-marriage tradition.
What Cyprus gives you that Vegas does not: beach ceremony, EU jurisdiction, honeymoon on Mediterranean beaches, warmer sea, shorter flight (4 hours vs 10).
Honest verdict: Vegas wins on speed and iconography. Gretna wins on cost and simplicity. Cyprus wins on aesthetics and honeymoon-adjacency. Pick the one that matches what you want the photos to look like - that is genuinely the deciding factor for most of our couples.
Step-by-step
- 01
Apply for ESTA and verify passport 6-month validity
At least 3 weeks before travel, apply for ESTA at esta.cbp.dhs.gov ($40 per person). Confirm both passports are valid at least 6 months beyond the travel date. If close to expiry, renew before booking flights.
- 02
Book flights and hotel
Direct BA or Virgin from LHR to LAS most mornings. Land Wednesday or Thursday for the elopement day; fly home Sunday or extend to honeymoon. Book the hotel direct - Cosmopolitan, Wynn, Bellagio, or Aria for the polished wedding-photo backdrop.
- 03
Reserve the chapel slot direct with the chapel
Book the ceremony 2-4 weeks out. Couples book directly with the chapel of their choice - LTV makes the intro to Neon Chapel (our partnership) for fast-turn elopements, or to a luxury planner if the ceremony is at Bellagio, Wynn, or another hotel-branded venue.
- 04
Land in Vegas and head to Clark County Marriage Bureau
Airport transfer to Strip hotel, drop bags, then Sprinter to 201 East Clark Ave. Bureau open 8am to midnight, 7 days a week. Present both UK passports, pay $102, walk out with the marriage licence in 45-90 minutes.
- 05
Attend the chapel ceremony
Chapel ceremonies run 20-40 minutes end to end including officiant, licence signing, and chapel-provided photos. One witness (chapel-provided) signs the licence. Chapel files the signed licence with the Bureau on your behalf within 10 business days.
- 06
Get a certified certificate copy before flying home
Pay $32 at the Bureau the morning after the ceremony for the expedited certified copy. This is the document GRO needs. Alternative: wait 4-8 weeks for the free mailed copy, but that delays UK registration.
- 07
Register the marriage at the UK General Register Office
Complete the Deposit of a Marriage Certificate form on gov.uk. Post the Nevada certified copy plus £22 cheque to GRO Southport. Processing: 4-6 weeks. Your UK marital status is then officially updated to the date of the Nevada ceremony.
Questions
Frequently asked
- Can you legally get married in Vegas if you're from the UK?
- Yes. Nevada has no residency requirement and no US citizenship requirement. Two UK passport holders walk into the Clark County Marriage Bureau, present their passports, pay the $102 licence fee, and can be legally married the same afternoon at any Nevada-licensed chapel. The Nevada marriage certificate is automatically recognised in the UK once you register it at the General Register Office on return - £22 fee, 4-6 weeks processing, no re-ceremony required.
- Can you just walk in and get married in Vegas?
- Yes, effectively. The Clark County Marriage Bureau is a walk-in facility - no appointment, no waiting period, no blood test. Total time from arrival to signed licence is 45-90 minutes on a weekday. You then take the licence to any Nevada-licensed chapel for the ceremony. Most UK elopement couples land in the morning, licence by lunch, married by evening.
- Can you just elope in Vegas?
- Yes - Vegas is the go-to destination for UK elopements because it is the fastest legal-marriage jurisdiction on earth. Nevada requires no notice period, no waiting period, no proof of residency and no witnesses beyond one (which chapels routinely provide). A two-person elopement can happen entirely on the day of arrival, and the Nevada certificate is fully recognised in the UK on return.
- Can UK citizens get married in the USA?
- Yes - and Nevada is by far the fastest US state for it. Most other states have residency requirements, waiting periods, or documentation requirements that make same-day marriage impossible for UK visitors. Nevada has none of those. Two UK passports plus the $102 fee is the entire paperwork requirement.
- How long does the whole Vegas elopement take from landing?
- The standard shape: land Wednesday or Thursday morning, licence by lunch, ceremony by early evening, dinner as newlyweds. Total elapsed time from wheels-down to married is 6-8 hours on a weekday. Longer on public holidays because the Bureau queue extends.
- Do we need witnesses for a Vegas elopement?
- Nevada law requires exactly ONE witness at the ceremony. Every chapel provides one at no extra charge - a chapel staff member acts as the legal witness. You do not need to bring a guest, and many UK couples elope with no guests at all. If you do bring witnesses, the maximum a small chapel can seat is usually 20-40 guests.
- How is a Nevada marriage certificate registered in the UK?
- Fill out the Deposit of a Marriage Certificate form on gov.uk, post it with the Nevada certified copy and a £22 cheque to GRO Southport. Processing takes 4-6 weeks. Once complete, your UK marital status is officially updated to the date of the Nevada ceremony. No re-ceremony, no consular step, no UK register office visit required. The Nevada certificate does not need an apostille.
- What does a Vegas elopement cost in pounds, all in?
- £800-1,500 for a bare-bones two-person elopement (licence, chapel, photographer at the ceremony hour, Sprinter transport, dinner for two). £1,500-2,500 for a mid-range setup with a nicer chapel and a longer photographer session. £2,500-5,000 for a hotel-branded ceremony with videographer and small guest cocktail hour. Flights (£400-800/person return from LHR) and hotel rooms (£150-500/night) sit on top and are booked direct by you.
