UK Passport Requirements for US Travel - the Rules and the Gotchas

In theory a UK passport valid through the day you fly home is enough for entry.

In practice, airlines enforce the stricter 6-month rule at check-in regardless. Why: airlines are fined US$3,300 per passenger by CBP when a passenger is refused entry, so they'd rather be strict than risk the fine. This is airline policy, not US law.

Practical rule for UK travellers: your passport should have at least 6 months of validity from your Vegas return date. If it doesn't, renew before you fly.

Example: you fly out 2026-11-15 and return 2026-11-22. Your passport must be valid until at least 2027-05-22 (return date + 6 months) to satisfy the airline check-in staff, even though CBP itself would technically admit you on a passport valid to 2026-11-30.
