ESTA for the USA - the UK Traveller's 2026 Guide

ESTA - Electronic System for Travel Authorization - is the US pre-clearance for travellers coming from Visa Waiver Programme countries. The UK is on that list, along with Ireland and about 40 others. It replaces the full B1/B2 tourist visa for stays under 90 days.

Two things to know: - It's checked at check-in at LHR/LGW/MAN - not on arrival in the US. Airlines won't let you board without an approved ESTA. - It's tied to your passport. If you get a new passport, you need a new ESTA.

Once approved, it's valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

ESTA is $40 USD per person in 2026 (technically $40.27 including processing). The fee went up from $21 on 30 September 2025 under Public Law 119-21, so if a friend tells you it's about £15 based on their last Vegas trip, they're remembering the old price - it nearly doubled.

That $40 is the full official cost via esta.cbp.dhs.gov. If a site is charging you £60, £80, £100 for ESTA "assistance", you're paying for a middleman markup on a form that takes fifteen minutes.

UK travel-optimised cards (Monzo, Chase UK, Revolut, Starling) charge zero FX so the whole thing is $40 on your card and nothing else.

Official minimum: 72 hours before departure. That's what CBP publishes.

Real minimum for peace of mind: three weeks, ideally the day you book flights. Here's why:

• ~1% of ESTAs get flagged for manual review, taking 7-10 days
• If denied, the fallback is a B1/B2 tourist visa at the US Embassy in London (3-6 weeks appointment wait + 1-2 weeks visa issuance)
• If you're denied 5 days before flying, you can't fix it in time

Apply the day you book. Set a WhatsApp deadline for your group. Track approvals - not just "submitted" statuses.

Denials are rare - approval rate is above 99% - but here's what triggers them for the tiny minority:

• Prior US visa denial (any type, any time)
• Prior arrest or conviction - including UK drug convictions. Cannabis is still federally illegal in the US and a UK cannabis conviction can trigger denial, even if it was decades ago and never went to court.
• Overstaying a previous US visit - even by a day
• Dual nationality with Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, North Korea or Cuba, or travel to any of those since March 2011
• Data-entry mistakes - the biggest cause of "denials" that aren't really denials. Wrong middle name, wrong passport number, wrong DOB. Check three times before hitting submit.

If you have a UK criminal record and are unsure, speak to a US immigration solicitor before applying. Once ESTA is denied, that denial is on your permanent record - the fallback becomes the B1/B2 visa process.

The four I see over and over:

• "My mate said it was £15" - old price, they last went pre-Sept 2025. It's $40 now.
• "I'll do it at the airport" - no you won't. Airlines refuse boarding without approval.
• "I don't need one because I'm just there for a weekend" - you do. Duration doesn't matter under 90 days; ESTA is required.
• "My passport is valid, I still have my old ESTA" - passport renewal invalidates the old ESTA. Reapply.

The other one: paying £60+ to a copycat "assistance" site. There is no assistance needed. The form asks for your passport, addresses, employer, and a handful of yes/no questions. It's fifteen minutes.

Two paths:

Path 1 - B1/B2 tourist visa. Book an appointment at the US Embassy in London or Belfast. Cost is around $185. Wait times fluctuate; currently 3-6 weeks for the interview, 1-2 more for the visa to be issued and returned. You'll need reason for travel, financial evidence, and evidence of ties to the UK (job, property, family) proving you'll come home.

Path 2 - accept it. If the timeline doesn't work for a visa, the trip goes ahead without you. Not what you want to hear, but every group trip has to plan for this contingency. Twice in the last year we've had group members denied - both times they joined on WhatsApp during the trip and the group carried on.
